J. Michael Lewis focuses his practice on professional liability law, representing insurers as coverage counsel in the areas of financial institutions and directors and officers insurance. Prior to joining Duane Morris, Mr. Lewis was associated with firms in New York City and Stamford, Connecticut, where he focused on litigation involving financial institutions and hedge funds as well as professional liability.
Mr. Lewis is a member of the Professional Liability Underwriting Society, the Connecticut Bar Association and the Greenwich (Connecticut) Bar Association and participates in the American Inns of Court. Admitted to practice in New York and Connecticut, Mr. Lewis is a 1995 graduate of the Columbia University School of Law. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and served on active duty as an Army officer prior to law school.
Representative Matters
- Represented insurers of global financial institutions in coverage disputes arising from securities class actions, major financial scandals and regulatory investigations.
- Provided advice on policy wording for insurers of public companies and financial industry entities including investment banks, broker dealers, commercial banks and hedge funds.
- Represented insurers in coverage disputes arising from litigation concerning the conduct of corporate directors & officers.
- Provided analysis of exposure to insurers arising from claims against a wide variety of financial institutions and publicly-listed corporations.
- Handled insurance issues arising from ERISA and bankruptcy claims.
- Provided advice to insurers on matters involving subprime mortgage securities and credit crises, technology company IPO litigation and collapses of significant public corporations.
- Represented London insurance market participants with regard to very significant U.S. financial institutions exposures.
- Represented insurers with regard to coverage disputes involving failures of insured entities to comply with computer discovery obligations in underlying litigation.
- Assisted insurers in interfacing with their reinsurers with regard to major exposures.
- Represented SIPC excess insurers in disputes arising from insolvency of broker dealers.
- Prior litigation experience in defending actions against broker dealers and hedge funds.
