CMS Never Events: What Nursing Homes Should Know About New Trends in Reimbursement Regulation
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced last summer that starting October 2008, Medicare will no longer pay for extra costs associated with so-called "never events." The justification is that these never events, whether amputating the wrong leg or providing extra treatment for hospital-borne infections, should never happen, and followup treatment for those events drive up the cost of healthcare. CMS has now promulgated rules stating what never events it will no longer pay for, including the extra cost of treating pressure ulcers, falls and six other preventable injuries and infections that occur while a patient is in a hospital. Come and learn what nursing homes should know about these new regulations and, more importantly, how these regulations, affecting hospitals, will also indirectly affect nursing homes and their abilities to care for their residents.
What You Need to Know About the Sweeping Changes to HIPAA Privacy and Security Laws
On February 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the $787 billion economic American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Act), specifically the HITECH Act, which included provisions for heightened enforcement of HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, stiffer penalties for privacy and security violations, as well as important changes to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules generally. The Act also calls for extended HIPAA compliance for business associates (vendors) of nursing homes. Contrary to popular belief, the HIPAA changes are important for both nursing homes and their vendors. This session will discuss the importance of nursing homes and their vendors updating their HIPAA compliance programs to comply with the new Act.
