Duane Morris to Host Roundtable Discussion on U.S. Trade Policy

Duane Morris and Duane Morris Government Affairs will host a roundtable discussion on U.S. trade policy with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce, the Honorable Juan Verde, to be held on January 11, 2011 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Duane Morris' Washington, D.C. office. The event is organized by the National Foreign Trade Council and will include representatives of Fortune 500 companies. Mr. Verde will discuss U.S.-Europe relations with a focus on U.S. trade policy towards the region as well as providing an overview of emerging export opportunities in renewable energy, green technology, construction, manufacturing and finance, as well as other issues.

Juan Verde was appointed to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Department of Commerce by President Barack Obama in December 2009. Mr. Verde is responsible for developing and recommending policies and programs, as well as directing their implementation, with respect to U.S. economic and commercial relations with 52 countries. He also leads the Department of Commerce's efforts to help solve trade policy and market access issues facing U.S. firms engaged in commercial activity throughout Europe and Eurasia.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Verde served as founder and former president of Public Administration Strategy Solutions (PASS®), a consulting firm that identifies, analyzes and communicates best practices for governments and corporations, specializing in international trade and renewable energies. During this time, Mr. Verde also founded and presided over the American Chamber of Commerce in the Canary Islands and has served on the boards of several Spanish and North American companies.

Before founding PASS in 2003, Mr. Verde was Director for Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula for the Corporate Executive Board (CEB), a publicly traded strategic research and consulting firm serving more than 2,000 of the most prestigious corporations and financial institutions around the world, including most of the Fortune 500 companies. In this capacity, Mr. Verde worked with top executives of some of the most prominent businesses in Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.

Throughout his career, Mr. Verde has been committed to social entrepreneurship and community organizing. As former president of the non-profit The Biosfera Foundation, he facilitated matchmaking contacts and the sharing of best practices among energy business leaders in order to promote the development of renewable energy projects and technologies. In 2007 he founded and became National Director of the Spanish branch of The Climate Project, Vice President Al Gore's U.S. and international grassroots climate change initiative, which promotes eco-friendly values and public awareness about global warming.

Mr. Verde's career and dedication to public administration was launched in the Boston Mayor's Office and the Boston City Council, where he worked as a business and legislative aide and a political and trade advisor. He has also worked on twelve different political campaigns, including those of Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Verde, a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute fellow, holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Boston University, where he graduated with honors. He has also completed graduate business studies at Georgetown University and at Tufts University.
