Duane Morris Partner John Nixon to Speak on "Tax Topics: Something Old; Something New" and "Member Information/Confidentiality"
June 27, 2012 | Philadelphia
| Hyatt Regency Philadelphia at Penn's Landing
Duane Morris partner John Nixon will be speaking on "Tax Topics: Something Old; Something New" and "Member Information/Confidentiality" at the National Association of Public Pension Attorneys' (NAPPA) 2012 Legal Education Conference, June 26-29, 2012, in Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, June 27, Mr. Nixon will be discussing "Tax Topics: Something Old; Something New," a workshop consisting of two segments. The first segment will provide NAPPA members with a primer on IRS Private Letter Rulings and IRS Determination Letters. The second segment will be a roundtable discussion by NAPPA members who are governmental attorneys, reviewing their comment letters that have been filed on the ANPRM regarding governmental plan status.
The following day, Thursday, June 28, the topic will be"Member Information/Confidentiality." As part of the attack on pubic employees and public pension plans in recent years, many media outlets and others have used specific individual benefit information to inflame the public about the perceived problems with public pension plans. Many states have statutes that require the pension system to keep member and benefit recipient information confidential. This panel will focus on the various issues around the country related to the confidentiality of member and benefit recipient information and will examine the different statutes around the country and how courts have interpreted these statutes.
