One of the strategically located offices in the Garden State is our northern New Jersey office in Newark, which is long recognized as the state's commercial and business hub. The Newark office is part of a national network of the firm's offices. The lawyers resident in the Newark office are supported by attorneys located in our Princeton office, as well as by approximately 120 of the firm's attorneys who are licensed to practice in New Jersey.

The firm's trial lawyers in Newark represent clients in commercial litigation, products liability, banking, financial institutions and architects and engineers, professional liability errors and omission liabilities, employment matters, white-collar criminal defense, marine, aviation and logistic litigation, and insurance and reinsurance matters. One of the attorneys in our Newark office has a background representing international companies in the United States, and has acted as United States counsel to foreign insurers and traders operating in the United States.
In the area of environmental law and litigation, we defend enforcement proceedings and counsel clients concerning their rights and obligations under federal statutes, including Superfund, the Clean Air Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, as well as under similar state and local laws. One of our attorneys was enforcement counsel for the United States Environmental Protection Agency for eight years.
We provide services in corporate and securities matters, representing companies in diverse industries in various stages of development. Our attorneys in the Newark office handle corporate governance issues, contract negotiations, private placements, venture capital financings, and primary and secondary public offerings, including initial public offerings, going-private transactions, SEC regulatory matters, and mergers and acquisitions.
Our lawyers also represent and counsel clients in real estate matters, providing both transactional and litigation support on issues relating to title insurance, lending, leasing, creditors' rights and lender liability, and in the development of planned real estate projects, including condominiums, cooperatives and planned unit developments.
Recent Representative Matters
Duane Morris represented Zeta Consumer Products Corp., owner of Tucker Housewares, in its chapter 11 proceeding in Newark, and the trustees of Kiwi Airlines, Inc. and Upsala College.Several of our partners represented a secured creditor in the TransWorld Airlines, Inc. bankruptcy and the bank group in the Armstrong World Industries, Inc. bankruptcy in the Wilmington, Delaware Bankruptcy Court. The firm represented the primary secured creditor in the Manhattan Bagel Co. chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The firm represents several secured creditors and equipment lessors in the chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding of United Healthcare Systems, Inc. which operated a full-service hospital in Newark, as well as specialized clinic facilities elsewhere in New Jersey, and had been designated the Children's Hospital of New Jersey.
Duane Morris represented a public utility company in a merger transaction and several technology companies were represented in venture financings. The firm represented a major national bank in a class action suit that was decided in favor of the bank client in a unanimous published opinion of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
The firm is presently defending several financial service clients in class action suits pending in the Federal District Court of New Jersey.
The firm is also representing one of the nation's largest energy companies in a variety of civil and criminal matters in the South. Additionally, our environmental and energy group has just completed a successful representation of a Fortune 500 company, persuading the federal EPA to change a Superfund remedy for a site in Puerto Rico. The firm is also representing another Fortune 500 client with regards to a Superfund removal action in the U.S. midwest region.
Duane Morris is representing shipper interests in major marine casualties involving oil pollution wreckage removal, casualties at sea, and complex well and A&I exposures. The firm is involved in major reinsurance disputes arising out of the Turkish earthquake of 1999, treaty litigation arising from worldwide trading reinsurance coverage and alleged fraud claims arising from commodity trading within the former Soviet bloc.
