PITTSBURGH, March 4, 2008 - Duane Morris is pleased to announce that Cynthia A. Baldwin, who until last month served as a Justice on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, will join the firm's Pittsburgh office as a partner in the Trial Practice Group and its Appellate Litigation subpractice.
Baldwin brings significant legal and academic experience to the firm. Before being appointed to serve on Pennsylvania's highest court from 2006 to early January 2008, she was a judge in various divisions of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas for 16 years. She served as the Attorney-in-Charge in the Office of the Attorney General at the Bureau of Consumer Protection under LeRoy Zimmerman from 1983 to 1986.
Baldwin was both a visiting and an adjunct professor at Duquesne University School of Law and also taught at Widener University Law School in the Trial Advocacy Program. Prior to attending law school, she taught English and was an assistant dean of student affairs at what is now the Greater Allegheny campus of The Pennsylvania State University.
In addition to her legal and academic work, Baldwin is a Trustee and Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University, is Trustee Emerita of the Duquesne University board and serves on the Pennsylvania Commission for Justice Initiatives. She is a member of many legal, business and civic organizations, including the International and National Associations of Women Judges, the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities, the International Women's Forum and the Fulbright Association. She previously served on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges Judicial Ethics Committee. Recently, she was elected a director of Pittsburgh-based Koppers Holdings Inc. She has been recognized for both her professional and community work with the Athena Award and as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, among others.
Baldwin will work with many clients and industries and expects to join an existing contingent of Duane Morris lawyers around the country who work with colleges and universities, serving these institutions' legal needs in litigation, transactional work, IP, real estate, and labor and employment from coast to coast.
Baldwin has written articles for the Pittsburgh Legal Journal and has lectured extensively on legal, educational and social topics concerning women, minorities and children. She has given commencement addresses at such educational institutions as Widener University, Carlow University, The Pennsylvania State University and many high schools and secondary institutions throughout Pennsylvania.
Baldwin received her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law, where she was a member of the Duquesne Law Review. She received her M.A. in American Literature and her B.A. in English from The Pennsylvania State University. She has also accumulated many hours of post-J.D. education from several universities.
