Senior Duane Morris Attorneys Demonstrate Leadership in Pro Bono
Duane Morris' pro bono roots inspire our current attorneys to make pro bono a priority. The firm's senior attorneys lead the way.
Duane Morris attorney Barry Bunshoft has been a member of the Save San Francisco Bay Association and its Legal Committee since the mid-1960s, and led one of that area's most significant environmental law victories. Save The Bay is the oldest and largest membership organization working exclusively to protect and restore the San Francisco Bay. Early in his legal career, Bunshoft represented the association in the courts and in hearings before the Bay Conservation and Development Commission in matters relating to the tidelands trust doctrine and Bay fill. His experience as a deputy attorney general for the state prepared him to take on the task, with grassroots activists, of helping to encourage government enforcement of existing environmental protection laws. Bunshoft formed a coalition that intervened in a lawsuit asserting public trust over the tidelands. Over the next decade the parties — environmental groups, including the Save San Francisco Bay Association, developers and a state government commission — negotiated a redrawing of the property lines in San Mateo County. As a result, the planned development in the tidelands in that area came to a halt.
The nonprofit Center for International Legal Studies selected Philadelphia trial attorney Reeder Fox to take part in its Visiting Professorships for Senior Lawyers program, which aims to introduce students and junior faculty of host universities in Eastern Europe to particular areas of common law legal systems. As a visiting professor at Donetsk National University in Donetsk, Ukraine, Fox taught a four-week seminar in May 2006 on topics of international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) law. He has extensive legal experience in the litigation of business, construction, professional liability and antitrust matters, as well as mediation and dispute resolution matters. A former chair of the Trial Practice Group of Duane Morris, he is also active in the International Association of Defense Counsel.
Roland Morris, former firm chairman, has been dedicated to helping the Philadelphia community and has given back through his leadership on various boards, including The Big Brother Association of Philadelphia, Citizens Crime Commission of Philadelphia, Legal Aid Society of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Urban Coalition, The Salvation Army and United Way.
For much of his career David Toomey has been a noted advocate for those on society's margins, having been president and an active member of the board of Community Legal Services. In 1993, Toomey was a recipient of the Community Legal Services' Champion Award. Toomey also served a three-year term on the board of governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association, a position that he utilized to extend legal services to Philadelphians in need.
Duane Morris' history of pro bono and community service, and the leadership of our senior attorneys, continues to inspire all of our attorneys and staff.
