Alexander Chester focuses his practice on the sports industry, where he represents and counsels clients that include professional and collegiate sports teams and leagues, owners and acquirers of professional sports teams, and universities and state and local governments in connection with stadium development projects, construction agreements, lease agreements, the acquisition of professional sports franchises, naming rights and sponsorship agreements, and licensing agreements between third parties and teams and leagues. Mr. Chester’s representative work in the sports industry includes representing developers, governments, major NCAA Division I universities and NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS teams in the development and construction of stadiums and media rights transactions and purchasers and sellers of majority and minority interests in sports and esports franchises.
Mr. Chester’s real estate experience includes representing developers, major corporations, real estate funds, investment banks, institutional lenders, property owners, tenants and joint venture partners in the acquisition, financing, management, leasing, subleasing and operation of office buildings, retail centers, hotels and commercial projects. Mr. Chester’s representative real estate work includes multibillion-dollar acquisitions in the healthcare industry and acquisitions and financings of major commercial office buildings, hotels and senior housing portfolios in New York City and across the United States. Mr. Chester’s real estate pro bono work includes negotiating lease documents for charter schools and other non-profit organizations and representing indigent clients in public housing matters.
Mr. Chester is a 2010 graduate of Harvard Law School, where he was supervising editor of Harvard Journal on Legislation, and a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
Represented David Tepper, founder and president of global hedge fund Appaloosa Management, in his acquisition of Major League Soccer's expansion team in Charlotte, North Carolina, and his $2.275 billion acquisition of the Carolina Panthers.
Represented green financial services company Aspiration in its founding partnership agreement with the Los Angeles Clippers and their new arena, the Intuit Dome and in its sponsorship partnership agreement with the Boston Red Sox.
Represented the Atlanta Braves in the sale of three minor league affiliates, the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, Double-A Mississippi Braves and High-A Rome Braves to Endeavor Group.
Represented SWB Investors LLC in its sale of the New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, to Endeavor Group.
- Represented the City of Miami in connection with the construction of a new soccer stadium for MLS’s Inter Miami CF.
Represented the state of New York in negotiations with the NFL's Buffalo Bills for the development of a new stadium.
Represented the NFL's Washington Commanders in connection with development of a new stadium and ancillary development.
Represented LaLiga, the Spanish soccer league, in its joint venture with Relevent Sports to commercialize its media, sponsorship, and licensing rights in North America and China.
Represented the West Villages Improvement District in connection with the construction of a new spring training facility for the Atlanta Braves, in Sarasota County, Florida.
Represented Syracuse University in connection with the proposed renovation/replacement of Carrier Dome and sponsorship/naming rights agreements related to Carrier Dome.
Represented Albert Friedberg, founder and president of the Canadian investment firm Friedberg Mercantile Group Ltd., in connection with the acquisition of a minority interest in the MLS franchise Orlando City SC.
Represented the State of Hawaii in connection with the development of a new stadium and ancillary development.
Represented Hillsborough County in connection with the development of a new community ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays, as well as ancillary development and infrastructure.
Advised The Washington Justice, formerly Washington Esports Ventures, in connection with entry into Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch League.
Represented the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation in negotiations for its new management agreement and related sale option of the Citi Open with Washington, D.C.-based venture capitalist and entrepreneur Mark Ein.

Represented IMG regarding an agreement with the Miami Dolphins to relocate the Miami Tennis Open to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Represented Lighthouse Guild International in connection with the sales of its New York City properties.
