AUSTIN, April 25, 2024—A team of Duane Morris attorneys led by Tia Fenton and including Christopher Ricciuti, Elissa Sanford and Alec Royka, all of the Washington, D.C., office; Matthew Gaudet, of the Atlanta office; and Holly Engelmann, of the Austin office, successfully defended Roku Inc. against allegations that its streaming video players infringe two Ioengine LLC patents (U.S. Patent Nos. 10,447,819 and 10,972,584.)

Filed in December 2021 and backed by litigation financiers, Ioengine sought $318 million in this trial. Ioengine won two previous jury verdicts against other defendants (represented by other law firms). Following a weeklong trial before U.S. District Judge Alan Albright in the Western District of Texas, the jury ruled that Roku did not infringe any asserted claim of Ioengine’s patents and thus did not reach the issue of validity.

Roku is a public tech company that pioneered video streaming devices through its streaming players and smart TVs, and leads U.S. streaming TV distribution. As of 2023, Roku reports over 80 million users globally.

The case is IOENGINE LLC v. Roku Inc., case number 6:21-cv-01296, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.
