Joaquin Hernandez practices in the area of intellectual property law assisting clients with patent, trademark, and copyright procurement (domestic and foreign) as well as portfolio management and counseling in the electrical, software, and mechanical industries. Mr. Hernandez also performs freedom-to-operate, design-around, infringement, and validity analyses.
Mr. Hernandez’s patent preparation and prosecution experience includes hardware and software designs related to: artificial intellegence and machine learning based systems; circuit designs; blockchain technologies; communication networks such as mobile networks (e.g., 3G, 4G), Wan/Lan networks, WLAN networks (e.g., Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth networks); communication protocols used across the networks; internet telephony (e.g., VOIP); digital and analog communication systems; and digital and analog control systems. His experience includes prosecution appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and he also has experience with the defense of trademark oppositions filed before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Prior to his legal career, Mr. Hernandez worked for more than a decade as an electrical engineer for a variety of technology firms in the telecommunications, defense, film, and consumer electronics industries. During this time, Mr. Hernandez designed and developed telecommunication equipment including handsets and base stations, home smart devices, defense systems, and film and video processing systems.
Mr. Hernandez is a 2014 cum laude graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was executive article editor for the Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property Law. Mr. Hernandez is also a summa cum laude graduate of Boston University (B.S., Electrical Engineering). He is fluent in Spanish.
