PHILADELPHIA, January 30, 2023—The Duane Morris Cannabis Group was named a Cannabis Group of the Year by Law360. The award honors the cannabis groups that worked on the biggest deals or achieved the biggest wins in the most important cases over the past year. Duane Morris was one of the first Am Law 100 firms to serve the cannabis industry and is still leading the way nearly a decade later, offering the full spectrum of legal services affecting both plant-touching and ancillary businesses in the cannabis space. The firm’s multidisciplinary cannabis practice is comprised of more than 50 lawyers in the firm who focus on an array of issues attendant to legal cannabis, hemp and ancillary business activities.

Duane Morris attorneys have gained comprehensive, hands-on, cannabis-related experience and apply that knowledge to advise clients based in the United States, Canada and other countries on the federal, state and local laws, regulations and governmental guidance relevant to conducting business and investing in cannabis. This includes the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (also known as the 2018 Farm Bill), Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money laundering (AML) statutes and the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and guidance, and state-specific marijuana and hemp regulations.

Duane Morris lawyers have advised its cannabis clients on a wide range of deals, including but not limited to, equity and debt financings, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate restructurings. The foregoing transactions have included publicly traded companies, cannabis operators, private funds, family offices and high-net-worth individuals. Duane Morris also provides guidance on key considerations and assessed risk for large non-cannabis companies, including several Fortune 100 and 500 companies, contemplating entry into or seeking to provide products or services to the cannabis industry.

Duane Morris attorneys also assist cannabis-related clients in understanding and assessing the federal and state regulatory framework for cannabis; applications for licenses to operate and related administrative matters; commercial litigation, including class action and consumer fraud litigation; negotiating and documenting investments, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions; conducting due diligence on the targets of such transactions; federal, state and local tax issues; day-to-day regulatory advice and general business counsel; and labor and employment, including workplace training and litigating workplace claims.

Duane Morris’ deep commitment to the cannabis space is best reflected in its ranking among the national leaders in cannabis law by Chambers and Partners. In addition, Duane Morris is the national law firm partner of the American Trade Association of Cannabis and Hemp, the first ever partnership between a major law firm and trade organization in this industry.
