PHILADELPHIA, October 7, 2013—Duane Morris LLP is pleased to announce that David J. Wolfsohn and Aleksander J. Goranin, formerly of the IP boutique Woodcock Washburn, have joined Duane Morris' Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group as partners in the Philadelphia office. The addition of Wolfsohn and Goranin further bolsters Duane Morris' national reputation in intellectual property, recognized as having one of the leading IP groups in the United States by U.S. News and World Report, Intellectual Property Today, IP Law360 and other publications.
David Wolfsohn is an IP litigator who has represented both defendants and plaintiffs in patent, copyright, licensing, trademark, unfair competition/Lanham Act and trade secret cases in jury trials, bench trials and arbitrations. He obtained the largest indirect-profits copyright award ever ($30.4 million) in The Graham Company v. USI MidAtlantic; a $70 million settlement of a patent-licensing and inventor ownership dispute; and other seven- and eight-figure settlements on behalf of plaintiffs. He has also obtained numerous settlements for nominal amounts in cases on the defense side, in which the plaintiffs were seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages. Chambers USA cited client sources describing Wolfsohn's "wonderful combination of technical knowledge and ability to connect with a jury and clients." In 2012, Wolfsohn was named Philadelphia Lawyer of the Year in Intellectual Property Litigation by Best Lawyers in America. Wolfsohn serves as the co-chair of the ABA's Intellectual Property Litigation Committee, and has served as the co-chair of the ABA's Trial Evidence Committee. He also serves as the treasurer of the Federal Bar Association's Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter, has served as the Section of Litigation’s Trial Evidence Committee from 2009 to 2012 and was the Philadelphia Chapter Chair of The Copyright Society of the U.S.A. from 2007 to 2009. He chaired the Woodcock Washburn Litigation Practice in 2010-2011.
Wolfsohn earned his J.D. in 1988 from the University of Chicago Law School, cum laude, and he was elected to the Order of the Coif. After law school, Wolfsohn served as a law clerk to the Honorable Walter K. Stapleton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before attending law school, he received a doctorate in classical piano from the Manhattan School of Music. He earned his B.A. in 1974 from Beloit College.
Aleksander J. Goranin served as chair of Woodcock Washburn's litigation practice from 2012 until his arrival at Duane Morris. He litigates patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret cases. His matters involve software, life sciences and manufacturing technologies, from operating system interfaces, object-oriented programming tools and relational databases to recombinant monoclonal antibodies, medical devices and container manufacturing processes. Goranin recently served as one of Microsoft's lead lawyers in a multi-patent dispute with Barnes & Noble before the U.S. International Trade Commission over the Nook e-reader software platform. He also played a key role, with Wolfsohn, in The Graham Company's case mentioned above. In addition to trial work, Goranin has represented clients at the appellate level before the Third Circuit and the Federal Circuit.
Goranin has been recognized by Chambers USA as an "Up and Coming" partner in intellectual property litigation, and by Best Lawyers in America as a "Best Lawyer" for patent litigation. Chambers USA client sources called Goranin "a fabulous lawyer and a really smart guy." Goranin is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He earned his J.D. in 2000 from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was on the Managing Board of the Virginia Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif. He earned his B.A. in Economics and Government & Politics in 1997, summa cum laude, from the University of Maryland. He attended college as a Francis Scott Key scholar on full scholarship. After law school, Goranin served as a law clerk to then-Chief Judge Edward R. Becker of the Third Circuit.
